Exploring Innovative Urban Design with Natlab and Architecture Center Eindhoven
ABOUT THIS EVENT
During Dutch Design Week 2025, Architecture Center Eindhoven and Natlab present the film 'Working Neighborhoods.' In this documentary, architect and urban designer Eric Frijters explores the possibilities of combining workspaces and residences in close proximity—what he calls the 'Smart Urban Mix.' Through a road trip across the Netherlands, Belgium, and France, Frijters investigates this concept, engaging with various experts such as Merten Nefs, Kristian Borret, and Leo van Broeck to discover innovative ways to blend living and working in the city of the future.
His findings reveal that this combination is more achievable than often believed, with successful examples already in place in Belgium and France featuring residences above workspaces, resulting in attractive and livable urban environments for diverse communities. To further develop the Smart Urban Mix concept, a new role for clients, governments, and designers is essential, contributing to a more dynamic city that promotes sustainable interaction and exchange. Following the screening, Eric Frijters will discuss his experiences in merging living and working spaces, highlighting Dutch examples and future urban prospects...
