ABOUT THIS EVENT
In 'Wolf Children', follow Hana, a young mother nurturing her two half-wolf children caught between the human world and the call of nature. Director Mamoru Hosoda weaves a tender and heart-wrenching coming-of-age story about love, loss, and letting go, filled with magic from the everyday. This intimate animated classic begins softly but lingers long after the credits roll.
'Wolf Children' is arguably the best (animated) film about a single mother. When university student Hana falls in love with a mysterious young man, she learns he is the last of his kind: a wolf that can transform into a human and vice versa. Together, they start a beautiful family, until Hana is suddenly left alone with their two wolf children. Yuki is stubborn and curious, while Ame is quieter and more cautious. Both are torn between their wild instincts and human existence. Hana protects her offspring at all costs and even moves deep into the Japanese countryside. Their story is so poignant that even wolves would weep.
Although Yuki (the narrator) fears she might be telling a simple fairy tale, director Mamoru Hosoda delivers a deeply human and even realistic film (alright, aside from the transforming wolves). Inspired by his own childhood and his mother, who raised him alone, the man behind modern anime classics like 'The Girl Who Leapt Through Time', 'Summer Wars', 'Mirai', and 'Belle' tells a story with great patience and a sense of the magic in everyday life. Despite its fantastical elements, 'Wolf Children' feels beautifully authentic. Love, nature, coming-of-age, grief, and the painful yet necessary art of letting go are seamlessly entwined in this rich tale about mothers, children, and the journey of discovering who you wish to be.
