ABOUT THIS EVENT
"Fatherland" is the latest film by Oscar-winning director Pawel Pawlikowski (Cold War, Ida). In this visually stunning and subtle narrative, Pawlikowski explores post-war Europe, where identity and family collide. The film stars Hanns Zischler (Munich) and Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of Fall, Zone of Interest) as father and daughter Thomas and Erika Mann, navigating a pivotal moment in their lives.
The premiere will feature an introduction by Theo van Eert, a seasoned history teacher with a passion for representation, material, and immaterial heritage. Van Eert's research into historical film emphasizes how movies often reflect more about the era of their release than the subject they portray.
Set against the backdrop of the summer of 1949, at the peak of the Cold War, writer and Nobel laureate Thomas Mann (Hanns Zischler) and his daughter Erika (Sandra Hüller) embark on an emotional road trip through a fragmented Germany. Driving through the US-dominated Frankfurt to the Soviet-occupied Weimar in their black Buick, Thomas Mann grapples with a divided homeland and personal tragedy after sixteen years of exile in the United States.
