ABOUT THIS EVENT

Curator of silent film Elif Rongen-Kaynakçi delves into the work of film pioneers Segundo de Chomón and Julienne Mathieu. Together, they founded their own production company and created colorful, imaginative films filled with innovative techniques that rivaled Méliès. Segundo de Chomón is one of the most versatile film pioneers, although his work hasn't always received the recognition it deserves. Hired by Pathé to match the popularity of Méliès, Chomón not only made magical and colorful short films for Pathé but also established a production company with his wife, Julienne Mathieu, in Barcelona: Ibérico Films. Thanks to in-depth international research by the Filmoteca de Catalunya, previously lost films by Chomón and Mathieu have been rediscovered, offering new insights into their work and lives. With a better understanding of their careers — including his transition to the Italian production house Itala, where he applied his pyrotechnics knowledge for special effects, and the tight-knit group of actors who frequently appeared in their films (such as Julienne's sister, France Mathieu) — we can better appreciate their pioneering work and admire their legacy even more. Experience a weekend full of silent films and live music. Opt for a day pass or a weekend ticket and immerse yourself in the world of early cinema.
