Despite the vibrant hustle and joy of their city, Neapolitans live perpetually aware of the looming threat of Vesuvius, which last erupted around eighty years ago. With stunning black-and-white cinematography—shot by Rosi himself—the director weaves together stories that seem to simmer with impending doom, as if the world of three million Italians could collapse at any moment under the weight of nature's wrath.
