Spotlight on Circus Innovation
ABOUT THIS EVENT
A surprising collection of short circus performances that pushes the boundaries of the genre. An evening filled with humor, innovative acrobatics, flamboyant drag, and personal stories. Catch it if you can!
In Great Catch, you will meet a new generation of circus artists. The Circus Coalition has selected three short performances where the edges of circus are explored with daring and originality. House of Circus presents an explosive mix of circus and drag, full of glitter and humor. Knot on Hands plays with the (im)possibilities of partner acrobatics in a mesmerizing language of movement. Using a ‘Cyrwheel’ without screws, Fenja Barteldres transforms the circular ring into a completely new device. Great Catch invites you to discover the many faces of circus.
About the Circus Coalition
Great Catch is an initiative of the Circus Coalition, a national collaboration among presenting and (co)producing institutions. Partners include Circusstad Festival, TENT, Festival Circolo, Korzo, Buro Piket in cooperation with MAAS theater and dance, Circusbende, De Schuur, Bijlmer Park Theater, Panama Pictures, Deventer op Stelten, CC Amstel, and the institutions Codarts and Fontys. Through this collaboration, the Circus Coalition aims to stimulate talent, performance spaces, and audience growth for circus in the Netherlands.
About House of Circus
House of Circus mixes circus and drag and is a pioneer in this realm. With plenty of glitter, they address vulnerable themes around self-expression, power, and gender identity. In SPOTLIGHT, they unleash all their circus skills to claim that coveted place in the spotlight. This pursuit of perfection is not without doubt and bruises, but it is accompanied by much humor, makeup, and show. Let yourself be guided by these circus queens and embrace whatever comes.
About Knot on Hands
The innovative trio Knot on Hands creates a pure and mesmerizing language of movement with breathtaking acrobatic discoveries. They question (im)possibilities, see the space as a dynamic collaborator, and swap roles (including between male and female). They work from a drive to keep exploring and always find a new path with their three bodies. For Great Catch, they are creating a new short piece with elements from their performances Brace for Impact, Concrete, and Passing by.
About Fenja Barteldres
Fenja Barteldres uses her Cyrwheel in a unique way: without screws. This makes the circular ring a completely different apparatus—wobbly and unstable, sometimes strangely bent, yet agile like a snake or fallen apart into loose parts. In Cyrrealism, a whole world unfolds from one metal wheel, where Fenja must continuously reinvent herself. A poetic metaphor for life's imperfections.
