ABOUT THIS EVENT
Hotel Modern and Abdelkader Benali team up for 'The Fall of Granada', a historical performance rich in narrative art, puppetry, shadow play, live animation, and music. For seven hundred years, the south of Spain was part of a prosperous Moorish kingdom where Muslims, Jews, and Christians coexisted. This era of flourishing arts and sciences ended in 1492 when Catholic Spain captured the last Moorish city, Granada. Following this, Muslims and Jews faced a long process of persecution and expulsion by the Spanish Inquisition. This history echoes unsettlingly with today's world, where exclusion and persecution are normalized and even encouraged. Hotel Modern and Abdelkader Benali bring to life the world of Granada through powerful images and words: the stories, dances, sorrow, and the unimaginable climax of the fall.
About Hotel Modern: This theater group creates complete miniature worlds on stage, populated by hundreds of characters. Using cameras, they film scenes in the models, projecting them on a large scale, accompanied by live soundtracks. Previous works include 'Kamp' and 'Garnalen Verhalen'. The artistic core consists of actresses Pauline Kalker and Arlène Hoornweg, along with visual artist Herman Helle.
About Abdelkader Benali: Born in Ighazzazen, Morocco (1975), Benali is an author and programmer known for exploring themes of identity, multiculturalism, and migration through his novels, essays, columns, and plays. Together, Hotel Modern and Abdelkader Benali present 'The Fall of Granada'.
