Raymi Sambo's Powerful Portrayal of Queer Activism
ABOUT THIS EVENT
Step into New York 1969, where a vibrant bar serves as the backdrop for fierce battles by Drag Queens and activists, including the legendary Marsha P. Johnson, fighting for their existence. This pivotal moment leads to the Stonewall riots, marking a significant call for equal rights for the queer community. Now, over fifty years later, the fight for queer rights faces new challenges.
In "Waiting for Marsha," a group of queer activists, led by Marvan, aims to seize World Pride 2026 to draw attention to increasing harassment and violence against queer individuals. The pacifist Marvan grapples with mounting pressure from the group to stand firm against adversity. They are determined to protect their freedom at all costs, but how far should they go?
Raymi Sambo expresses deep concern about the rising violence against queer individuals, even in the Netherlands. Like the characters in this performance, he hopes for a new Stonewall moment, igniting the spirit of change through theater.
This is the second in a series focused on controversial Black women in history, following the successful play "Who’s Afraid of Sylvana?"
