A Powerful Adaptation by Het Nationale Theater | Directed by Belle van Heerikhuizen
ABOUT THIS EVENT
Blanche is an adaptation of the classic 'A Streetcar Named Desire.' The vulnerable yet proud Blanche flees her past and temporarily moves in with her sister and brother-in-law. Tensions run high as they coexist in close quarters, leading to a disastrous night filled with rising conflicts. Witness the award-winning Mariana Aparicio as Blanche, alongside Joris Smit and Esther Scheldwacht.
Fleeing the Past
Blanche Dubois has decided to leave her past behind. She moves in temporarily with her sister Stella and brother-in-law Stanley, but she is shocked by Stella's life, dominated by her husband. Stanley, in turn, feels threatened by Blanche's arrival. The tensions escalate, culminating in a violent sexual encounter between Blanche and Stanley while Stella is away for the night.
A Long Dark Night
For this production, director Belle van Heerikhuizen collaborates once again with writer Annet Bremen, with whom she previously created the acclaimed 'Wil je een snoepje?' (2022). While Tennessee Williams describes all events in his original piece 'A Streetcar Named Desire' (1947) leading up to the night Blanche is assaulted and the morning after, this adaptation focuses specifically on that dark night. What exactly happened?
Director Belle van Heerikhuizen says:
“Blanche is a woman struggling with her loneliness. In response, she weaponizes her femininity. However, when she confronts Stanley, she ignites something she can no longer control. I find it fascinating to focus on the part Tennessee Williams skipped in his play: the long dark night when everything went wrong.”
