Explore the Deep Connection Between Film and Philosophy
ABOUT THIS EVENT
Join film journalist Kevin Toma and philosopher Sabine Winters for a captivating new course that delves into the relationship between film and philosophy. Through four thought-provoking themes and striking excerpts from world cinema, they demonstrate how films not only make philosophical ideas visible but also tangible. The joy of conscious and philosophical film-watching is always at the forefront.
**Film as Philosophy**
We often dismiss film as mere entertainment, unlike a good book or a music piece. However, film as an art form has much more to offer; even when we think we're consuming it mindlessly, we draw conclusions about what we see and hear. It challenges us to think.
**Session 3: Wonder (25th November)**
Delve into scenes that evoke curiosity and wonder, challenging viewers to explore the lives of characters. This session invites participants to let go of their expectations and be open to the unexpected, finding joy in the ordinary and the extraordinary. Kevin Toma and Sabine Winters argue that this is where the unique power of film lies.
**Session 4: Sleep (9th December)**
Sleep is a universal experience, yet remains a mystery. Each night, we transition to the dream world, an everyday but elusive phenomenon. This fascinating session investigates how films represent sleep and engage with the history of thought surrounding it. Discover the myriad portrayals of sleeping, half-awake, dreaming, and sleepwalking characters in cinema. Are they truly asleep? And why do some films attempt to lull their audiences to sleep?
